8th December - Staged Oratorio: Is it opera? Exploring staging Handel’s Messiah – In collaboration with Opera Prelude
On 8th December Opera Lyrica's Artistic Director, Paola, will be lecturing for Opera Prelude at the Cadogan Hall.
In a collaborative talk, Paola and mezzo soprano Anna Harvey will be introducing the history of staging sacred oratorio, from its beginnings in 17th century Venice to the recent trend for staged Handel oratorios, Bach Passions and Messiahs, discussing what is gained from staging these works and, ultimately, if staging them makes them opera. This will be followed by an open rehearsal where Opera Prelude young singers (see below), under the guidance of Paola, will rehearse and perform a staged section of Handel's Messiah.

Opera Lyrica are delighted to have been asked to contribute an evening of music to accompany a conference on 5th December 2015 at The Little Oratory, Brompton Road, London. We will present an evening of music, both vocal and instrumental, to represent Louis XIV's influence on European style (link to the conference here), including music by Lully, Purcell and Blow. The concert is open to the public, so we look forward to seeing you there!

We are looking for two REPETITEURS for our productions of La Traviata (MD Matthew Waldren) and Cosi Fan Tutte (MD William Cole) respectively in May (8th-11th) in Notting Hill. The repetiteur for Cosi would also ideally play continuo for the performances on 9th, 10th and 11th May. Must have good availability from mid-March and in April. Opera Prelude and Opera Lyrica: Two lecture-recitals on Handel
Come and join us in our collaboration with Opera Prelude as we explore Handel's music in a lecture-recital with performances from Caroline Kennedy (soprano), Guy James (countertenor) and Paola Cuffolo (mezzo soprano), accompanied on the harpsichord by David Gerrard. The lecture will be performed by Paola, who is an Opera Prelude regular, and will look at what made Handel special, as well as how his music has been performed since its inception and the challenges that face young singers in trying to master it.

We're holding a round of auditions for MEN only for our semi-staged baroque double bill of Venus and Adonis (Blow) and Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), which is taking place in mid-February 2015. The shows will be double cast, so everyone would play a role in each. We are looking for:
Countertenor: Cupid (Blow) and Spirit (Purcell)
Tenor: Chorus tenor (Blow) and Aeneas (Purcell)
Baritone: Adonis (Blow) and Chorus bass (Purcell)
Bass: Chorus bass (Blow) and Sorcerer (Purcell)
All chorus parts are one to a part.
Rehearsals will be mostly in January with a few music calls at the end of November.
Auditions will be held on 20TH OCTOBER in London. Interested applicants should send a CV to Paola on info@operalyrica.co.uk. Spread the word!

We are delighted to be collaborating with Opera Prelude to bring you a Handel concert-lecture, exploring the diversity of Handel's repertoire (unlikely as this seems) and the history of how it has been performed. Featuring Caroline Kennedy (soprano), Paola Cuffolo (mezzo-soprano) and Alexander Simpson (countertenor), plus Nicholas Simpson accompanying on the harpsichord, the concert promises some vocal fireworks to get you in the Christmas spirit!
Opera Prelude is a small, not-for-profit organisation that gives experience and employment opportunities to some of the country's finest young singers by allowing them to give performance-based lectures about opera. Every ticket sold, subscription or donation made, directly supports emerging young professional singers and an educational outreach programme for disadvantaged children during the summer months.

These will be for our November semi-staged double-bill of Blow's Venus and Adonis and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, which is taking place in venues in the South of England at the beginning of November. We will be doubling certain roles between the two operas, and are looking for:

We are delighted to open applications to audition for Opera Lyrica's 2013-14 season, featuring new productions of Handel's Acis and Galatea in Autumn 2013 and Mozart's Così Fan Tutte in February 2014.
Auditions for Acis and Galatea will be held on 26th and 27th July 2013 in Oxford, with performance dates in late October and early November. To apply for an audition or for more information, please email info@operalyrica.co.uk with your CV.
We also welcome applications from those interested in joining our chorus, design or technical teams.
